Fun family moments can happen at any time, any place, and in any weather. Because of Hanissa’s surgery in the fall, our outdoor activities have been much more challenging.
We made a trip to the park at Thanksgiving and the swing was the only thing Hanissa could do. But, she had a great view of her cousin running around and playing. A wheelchair is definitely not the best way to enjoy a playground.
Casts, wheelchairs, walkers, not mention medically fragile legs have kept us indoors a lot this winter. The first snow after Hanissa’s casts were removed, but before she was walking, I bundled her up and carried her out to let her sit in the snow and play. She loved it and I had to force her back inside. (Which isn’t too hard when you are her only mode of transportation.) ☺
We have come a long way since surgery in early November. Last week, Hanissa walked to the park, unassisted, in the snow. I can’t tell you how amazing this feat is for her. We needed this hour outside just playing together as a family.
Winter is an amazing season. A time of wonder for kids and adults alike. Yes, it is bothersome to shovel that snow. Yes, it can be cold. But, it is also beautiful. And if you don’t have to work very hard to create special family moments that will be remembered for a lifetime.
I hope when my kids think back to their childhood, they won’t remember us grumbling about the heat, the cold, or the weather (not that this never happens), but they will remember that we found ways to enjoy it all as a family.
