Carol of the Bells

Carol of the Bells isn’t what we would consider a spiritual song. As a matter of fact, the original song wasn’t written for Christmas at all. In the early 20th century, an American heard the Ukrainian folk song and the melody reminded him of Christmas bells. He rewrote the song and I’m so glad he did.

This song reminds me to be joyful. When Christ comes, the darkness must flee and light, peace, and joy are left. Christ’s birth is reason to rejoice. Thinking back on the Christmas story, Herod is the only one not celebrating. (Read about it in Matthew 2.)

I know that December 25 isn’t the actual day Jesus was born. I know that we are not commanded to celebrate and remember His birth. And, if it was just a birth, what would be the point. Many great men have been born throughout history, but only One came purposefully to the earth. Only One fulfilled every prophecy written about the Messiah, including those surrounding His birth. Only One took on all our sins and endured the cross. Only One rose again. Only One.

And it all started with His birth in a stable. So, yes, I’m excited to celebrate His advent. I’m filled with joy because of who He is and what He is doing in my life. And this little song reminds me that Christmas is here and there is reason to celebrate.

Hark how the bells,
Sweet silver bells,
All seem to say,
Throw cares away

Christmas is here,
Bringing good cheer,
To young and old,
Meek and the bold.

Ding dong ding dong
That is their song
With joyful ring
All caroling.

One seems to hear
Words of good cheer
From everywhere
Filling the air.

Oh how they pound,
Raising the sound,
O’er hill and dale,
Telling their tale.

Gaily they ring
While people sing
Songs of good cheer,
Christmas is here.

Merry, Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas,
Merry, Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas.

On on they send,
On without end,
Their joyful tone
To every home.

Ding dong ding dong
Ding dong ding dong
Hark how the bells,
Sweet silver bells,

All seem to say,
Throw cares away
Christmas is here,
Bringing good cheer,

To young and old,
Meek and the bold.

Oh how they pound,
Raising the sound,
O’er hill and dale,
Telling their tale.

Gaily they ring
While people sing
Songs of good cheer,
Christmas is here.

Merry, Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas,
Merry Christmas
Merry, Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas,
