He Made a Way in a Manger

Justice is a natural longing in our hearts. If someone hurts us, we want it acknowledged and rectified. When something untrue is said about us, we desire to get the truth out and put the gossip to shame. Justice. We walk around assuming it is our right for it to be meted out against those who wrong us.

But what about all the wrongs we do? We call out for mercy and forgiveness for our sinful thoughts, words, and deeds against the most Holy of holies. We can’t understand why a loving God would hold something so small against us. We expect Him to forgive again and again and again.

According to God’s word, the payment for sin is death. That is what justice demands. God is always just. It is part of the essence of who He is and He will never act outside of His nature. So we are doomed. Justice must be met.

Thankfully, there is more. God, in His great love for us, provided an escape from the judgement. It is simple, but many refuse to accept or even acknowledge this provision. They argue that a God of Love would never cast judgement on them all the while their hunger for justice may destroy relationships, tear families apart, and feed bitterness. In the same way He is just, God is also Love. He demonstrated His love to us even as we were in the act of sinning against Him. Still, He reached out to us. The Bible calls it “the gift of God” and it is available only through Jesus Christ.

He became a man to make a way for us. Sin demanded justice and God displayed His mercy because He is Love and He is Just.

Looking for a Savior, a hopeless world would wait
Sin demanded justice at a price we could not pay
But God displayed His mercy, The greatest gift of love
When we could not reach Heaven, Heaven came to us

He made a way in a manger, A way through the Son
Messiah, the promised before time had begun
For God so loved this world Though He knew what love would cost
He made a way in a manger, to make a way to the cross

In Bethlehem, a stable became a throne of grace
As God himself our Savior drew near to take our place
His mother smiled in wonder As shepherds stood in awe
The Sacrifice of Heaven lay, Sleeping in the straw

He made a way in a manger, A way through the Son
Messiah, the promised before time had begun
For God so loved this world Though He knew what love would cost
He made a way in a manger to make a way to the cross

He is the life who died our death
The precious Lord Jesus Laid down His sweet head
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed
The little Lord Jesus Laid down His sweet head
The stars in the sky Looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay

He made a way in a manger, A way through the Son
Messiah, the promised before time had begun
For God so loved this world Though He knew what love would cost
He made a way in a manger To make a way to the cross
He made a way

Jesus was born to pay our debt. We are justified through Him. It is because God is love that He sent His son to save us from the judgement we deserve. We celebrate Christmas with thanksgiving in our hearts. It is the beginning of Christ’s journey as a man, but the completion of God’s plan created because of His great mercy and love.
